Simcic Ribolla - Slovenia
REGION: Goriska Brda, Slovenia
Slovenia is yet another Old-World wine producer that is emerging from the shadows of more prestigious regions, along with Portugal, Greece, Croatia and Hungary. Marjan Simčič represents the fifth generation of winemakers in the small village of Ceglo in the region of Goriška Brda. Half of his vineyards are situated in Italy, the other half in Slovenia where the nearby Trnovo forest helps to shield the vines against any cold weather. Ribolla is a Slovene variety that used to be considered poor quality due to its highly productive nature when young (much like Cinsault in the South of France), but when older produces something fascinating.
