REGION: McLaren Vale, Australia
It's truly time for a proper resurgence of great Australian wines. This may seem an odd thing to say, given the preponderance of them on our shelves, but by and large, the vast majority of them are very much entry-level quaffers. There is a huge amount of good work being done in the mid-range, and this is truly a great example of this. Gone are the huge chocolate and menthol bombs of Aussie Shiraz, and in are these much more restrained, well-balanced, yet still delightfully smooth and rich versions. Blewitt Springs, where these grapes come from, have wild geese roaming through the vines.
