Remarkably, winemaking in this part of Germany dates back to the 16th Century, although Ernst Dautel (pronounced Dow-tle) and his son are more modern in their outlook than that. Understanding that the region could produce wines of the calibre of the French, Californian and South African wines he had tasted on his travels, son Christian is a very dedicated and committed winemaker, with great attention to detail. Entering into his tasting room will see you confronted by a wall containing samples of the 4 different soil types on his land. This shows the visitor exactly where he sees his work - out in the vineyards.
