Different season, same amount of fun
Wow, that was pretty sudden wasn't it? I seem to remember it was only a week ago that I was happily sitting out in the garden in the sunshine in a t-shirt, and now look at it? We've had a decent amount of sunshine at least, and I never complain about the change of seasons really, as it does change the scenery and of course, what we eat and drink.
We love summer for rosés, crisp whites, light reds and BBQs, but we love autumn even more for richer, spicier wines... and spirits! Of course, cocktails can be enjoyed at any time of the year, but choose your mix right, and you can really get that warming feeling.
In Chagford and Ashburton this month, our tasting was therefore all about making some classic cocktails which can easily be prepared at home. With the aid of the lovely Liz, we had a great evening in Chagford last Thursday and we're looking forward to showing off the following amazing 5 cocktails in Ashburton next week:
- Champagne Cocktail
- Brown sugar in glass
- Add a couple of drops of bitters (optional)
- Add 25ml Brandy
- Top up with Sparkling Wine
- Boston Sidecar
- 25ml Rum, Triple Sec and Brandy
- Add juice of 1 lime
- Shake over ice and serve in chilled Martini glass with an orange twist
- Fill glass with ice
- Add 50ml each gin, Campari, Red Vermouth
- Stir with orange twist
- Fill mixing glass with ice
- Add 50ml bourbon/whiskey and 10ml Red Vermouth
- Add dash of bitters
- Strain and serve with cherry
- Toffee Apple Daiquiri
- Add 25ml Rum and 50ml Caramel Liqueur to blender with pre-frozen Apple Juice cubes
- Blend and serve with apple rounds.
On the evenings, we'll be talking about the history of these cocktails, and some of the fascinating stories of the spirits that go into them. I don't want to spoil the surprise for those who haven't heard it in Ashburton yet, so I'll update this post later with a synopsis.
